Weaving and Textiles

2023-2024 great news is that I won a bursary with CuratorSpace which meant that I could buy my own table loom so that I could weave from home, that said I still use the floor standing dobby looms at Sunnybank Mills, Farsley.

I designed and wove 23ft of cloth, which I named Thou Shall (not), which was inspired by writing 'lines' at school as a form of punishment whilst instilling the 'correct' behaviour. This is a work in progress, it was relentlessly warped, measured and woven in the cold month of January 2024.

This work was followed several months later with a french navy woollen warp and weft with ivory silk weft based on carbon-copy paper based coded messages.

Hand weaving on the Dobby looms

Loom weaving quietens my mind
The heavy clank of the catapulted shuttle and chit-chat filling the air, history, heritage and my great aunts Gloria and Iris worked in the mill.
Between the warp and weft is me
Weft is dependable, reliable, yet feisty and fun
There are options to be had, to excite and thrill.
Warp is sturdy, strong, holds, contains and offers protection, strength and stability.
